ResistDance - Rise Up and Dance
ResistDance is a collective coming together to support global safety, equity, and peace. Using dance and movement to foster strength and expression as well as create community and uplift others. ResistDance is a free quarterly event, with a suggested donation that would go directly to various organizations that represent our mission
Throughout history, dance and movement have been an expression of the times and culture from where they were created, and in many of instances they have been used to voice rebellion, resistance, and protest. From Flamenco, which has its roots in the persecuted Gypsies of Spain, to Capoeira, a Brazilian martial art that originated from enslaved Africans, dance and movement have helped to unify people and allow them to express their dissent. ResistDance was inspired from this history, and our goal is to not only serve communities whose safety and well-being is threatened, but also to build connections and a community of kindness and hope
A one-hour movement class will be provided by Aware Body Lab, and features our Raqslates program, a fun fitness class that fuses principles of the Pilates method with elements of Middle-eastern Bellydance and Modern dance. Class will focus on core strength and postural support while learning to articulate and express yourself through movement
Class will be followed by an additional hour of socializing, open-dancing, and building awareness about our beneficiary organizations and their work. There is no required experience for this event and we encourage anyone who wants to help to attend. Aware Body Lab is an inclusive space and celebrates diversity. We encourage people of all ages, genders, races, sexual orientation, backgrounds, and body types to join us. Please bring your own fitness/yoga mat for the class, a water bottle, and something to wrap around your hips (optional)
